John Walker Lindh trail wraps up

Aug 30, 2012

Court action in the case between American-born Taliban fighter John Walker Lindh and the Terre Haute federal prison in which he is housed wrapped up Thursday.

Lindh and other Muslim inmates at the Communications Management Unit in the Terre Haute prison filed suit against the government, seeking to pray in a group once a day.  Group prayer is currently restricted to once a week gatherings.

Lindh says his religious rights are being infringed upon.  Prison officials say group prayer poses security concerns and the once-a-week allowances are enough.

Witnesses on behalf of the federal prison in Terre Haute got their say in federal court Tuesday over whether Muslims at the prison are being unfairly denied the right to pray daily as a group.

Attorneys for the government called two witnesses Tuesday: David Holston, the prison’s supervisory chaplain, and imam Ammar Amonette, the head of the Islamic Center of Virginia.

Restitution fund issues first check

Aug 27, 2012

Two years after its creation, Indiana’s Securities Restitution Fund – which provides relief for victims of investment scams – paid out its first check, and Secretary of State Connie Lawson says there should be more to come.

A major reason why it took two years for a single check to be issued from the fund is timing: to be eligible for relief, the scam must have taken place on or after July 1, 2010. That's the date the law creating the fund took effect.

Secretary Lawson says the time between the crime and when the victim gets relief can be lengthy.
