Zach Bernard


Zach joined 89.1 WBOI as a reporter and local host for All Things Considered. He currently hosts Morning Edition.

Previously, he worked for WGLT in Normal, Ill. and reported from the Illinois Capitol for WICS-TV.

Zach graduated from Illinois State University with a major in broadcast journalism and a minor in political science. He has his master's degree in Public Affairs Reporting from the University of Illinois at Springfield.


When the City announced its Housing and Urban Development action plan in November, improving public safety in lower-income neighborhoods was one of the top priorities.


Housing and Urban Development dollars must be used to improve the quality of life for low- to moderate-income residents. In Fort Wayne’s HUD Action Plan, the city aims to decrease and prevent homelessness by providing more affordable housing and increasing educational and employment opportunities.

However, the City also acknowledges that there’s no simple solution to combating homelessness.

Fort Wayne is hoping to use Housing and Urban Development dollars along with city money to bring in at least 20 new businesses by 2020.

New franchise and retail businesses have come to the downtown area in recent years, like the Harrison and Ash Brokerage buildings, and the City has plans to expand that growth.

The City is hoping to use Housing and Urban Development dollars along with city money to keep 50 residents in their homes.

This objective is directed at senior citizens and people with disabilities whose homes no longer accommodate their needs.

When the City announced its plans for the federal Housing and Urban Development funding it received, the first objective was to improve curb appeal of its neighborhoods and increase housing and rental opportunities.

And over the next five years, the City hopes to improve 500 homes and either build or rehab almost 300 homes or rental properties.

Every five years, cities around the country receive funding from the federal government to invest in long-term improvement projects in their neighborhoods. Fort Wayne was one of the cities that received Housing and Urban Development – or, HUD – dollars this year, and plans for the money were recently unveiled.
