City Council Approves Contribution Limits For Contractors

Elevatus Architecture

Fort Wayne City Council voted 6-2 in favor of a bill that would limit campaign contributions from contractors Tuesday night.

The bill, proposed by council members John Crawford and Jason Arp, would prevent contractors from bidding on projects if they donate more than $2,000 to a campaign in one year. Crawford stated last week the goal is to improve faith in local government by closing what could be seen as a suspicious loophole.

Opponents of the measure have expressed concern over its constitutionality at the state and federal level, citing First Amendment protections.

Councilmen Geoff Paddock and Glynn Hines were the two dissenting votes; Michael Barranda also opposed the measure but was not present for the final vote.

According to spokesman John Perlich, Mayor Tom Henry is not ruling out a veto of the proposal once it reaches his desk.
