Committee to Study Efficiency in Allen County Government

Allen County Board of Commissioners

A new committee will explore ways to improve efficiency and effectiveness in Allen County’s executive branch. The announcement was made Wednesday.

The formation of the committee comes just two days after voters decisively shot down a ballot proposal to restructure Allen County’s leadership. Supporters of the referendum claimed it would streamline decision-making and increase checks and balances.

Greater Fort Wayne Inc. was among those supporters. Its CEO Mark Becker, will serve on the new committee.

He says he’s pleased the commissioners are ready to search for new efficiencies in county government. While he says he respects the will of the voters, they should understand there are still things that can be improved upon.

“There’s been a lot of good work that’s been done within the county looking for example at the permitting process," says Becker, "and there are a lot of different departments that touch that process, and there’s a lot of good improvements that’s been made, but there’s a lot more that can happen. What can we do to ensure it’s the best process available in the state?”

Other members of the committee include those who came out strongly against the restructuring proposal, claiming that governments are inefficient by design.
