Former Pres. Bill Clinton campaigned for his wife Hillary Clinton on Friday at the McMillen Park Community Center in Fort Wayne.
When Clinton started talking about Hillary Clinton’s co-founding of the Senate Manufacturing Caucus during her time in Congress, he was interrupted by a member of the audience who shouted, “Repeal NAFTA!”
Clinton signed the North American Free Trade Agreement into law when he was president, eliminating almost all tariffs and trade restrictions between the U.S., Canada and Mexico. He responded by bringing up Carrier Corporation, an Indiana company moving to Mexico.
Clinton says it wasn’t NAFTA that made Carrier leave, it was greed.
“They say they’re going to save $65 million by moving this operation to Mexico,” Clinton said. “Maybe they will because labor’s so cheap, but $65 million is a tiny fraction of their profit.”
Clinton says the union tried to find ways to save the company almost that amount, but says Carrier wouldn’t negotiate.
The former president also talked about how Hillary Clinton wants to curb opioid abuse in the U.S., a problem prevalent in Indiana, and also raise the minimum wage, which remains at the federal minimum in the state.
