FWCS Receives $500,000, 100 Instrument Donation To Launch Fundraising Challenge

Zach Bernard/WBOI News

A donation to an area school district aims to bring new musical instruments to students, and kicked off a fundraising challenge.

Chuck and Lisa Surack of Sweetwater donated $500,000 and 100 instruments to Fort Wayne Community Schools’ “b instrumental” program, which began in 2015.

The donation also launches a fundraising challenge, which is to raise $3 million for the program over the next 12 years. The Suracks will also match donations from the community.

Chuck Surack spoke about why learning an instrument is important for a child’s development.

“Maybe they start a business, maybe they become more creative,” said Surack. “As an employer, we consider creativity one of the top skills of success in our workforce.”

Along with the $3 million campaign, the Fort Wayne Community School district kicked in $1.5 million of its own to the “b instrumental” program.
