JIRK Comedy Fosters the Funny in Fort Wayne

There's an old showbiz saying: “Dying is easy. Comedy is hard.”

And for a while, comedy was hard to do in Fort Wayne, at least according to Ian Anderson and Dirk Walker, two of the co-founders of the group, JIRK Comedy.

Before JIRK was founded in 2013, they say it was difficult to practice the craft because of a lack of opportunities for newer comics to perform material.

But that’s changed. With regular open mic nights and special events all over the calendar, JIRK has helped to foster a local standup comedy community that continues to grow.

WBOI’s Julia Meek invited Anderson and Walker to the Madge Rothschild Studios to find out more about JIRK and the Fort Wayne comedy scene.

You can find out more about JIRK Comedy events at the group's Facebook page.

A Fort Wayne native, Julia is a radio host, graphic artist, and community volunteer, who has contributed to NIPR both on- and off-air for forty years. Besides being WBOI's arts & culture reporter, she currently co-produces and hosts Folktales and Meet the Music.
