For the first time in more than thirty years, the race for Fort Wayne City Clerk will not feature the Democrat who’s held the seat for decades.
Democrat Sandy Kennedy has served as Fort Wayne City Clerk since 1983. This year she’s opting not to run for re-election.
The clerk maintains official records, prepares agendas for and schedules City Council meetings, and works with the public handling traffic violations. The open seat has drawn one Democratic candidate. Current Chief Deputy Clerk Angela Davis will be unopposed on the May 5th ballot.
Vying for the Republican nomination are Lana Keesling and Derek Pillie.
53 year-old Keesling works for Commercial Warehouse & Cartage, and tells the News Sentinel that she would like to see the clerk’s office utilize better technology, and make sure downtown Fort Wayne is visitor friendly.
38 year-old Derek Pillie works for Cirrus ABS, a technology and marketing firm. He tells the Journal Gazette he would bring a balance of public and private sector experience to the office.
The winning candidate will begin their four-year term on January 1st.
