Local Republicans React To Cruz Campaign Suspension

Republican presidential hopeful Ted Cruz announced the suspension of his campaign after losing the primary in Indiana on Tuesday night.

Ted Cruz said he would continue his presidential campaign even if he lost Indiana, but he had a change of heart. With the suspension of Cruz’s campaign, Senate President David Long -- who was victorious in his own primary battle for state senator -- stressed unity at the watch party at the Allen County GOP Headquarters.

“We have a governor’s race to win," said Long. "We have a presidency to win. We have other seats to win. And it’s going to be very important that we pull together and put our differences aside and remember that Republicans running this state have made it what it is today.”

Allen County GOP chairman Steve Shine says he met with both Donald Trump and Ted Cruz during their visits to Fort Wayne. He said he’s confident the party will succeed in November.

“All of them have one thing in common, in that they are loyal Republicans," Shine said. "So if we can combine that in the fall, we’ll have a Republican president and we will not have Hillary Clinton in 2017.”

Despite suspending his campaign, early results show Cruz winning Allen County, even though he lost the state as a whole.
