New City Event Invites You To Come Play In The Street

Three Rivers Festival begins in downtown Fort Wayne this weekend, and Sunday afternoon, the city is encouraging residents to walk, bike or skate their way right into the heart of the festivities with its first-ever "Open Streets" event.

A two mile stretch of Calhoun Street will be closed to motorized traffic, allowing over 90 free, family-friendly activities to be enjoyed at 17 "activity hubs" along the route.

Neighborhood businesses and organizations are eager to participate as well, and many that are normally closed on Sundays, will be opening for the celebration. Here's a glimpse of how the corridor looks in its usual, motorized mode:

Earlier this week, WBOI's Julia Meek invited Frank Suarez, Fort Wayne's Communications director for Public Works, and Greenway and Trails Program manager, Amy Hartzog into the studio, to discuss how this "oversized block party" will strengthen community connections, and encourage awareness for "active transportation."
