Old Crown Brass Band Toots Its Own Horn

Band founders, Eric Schweikert and Sam Gnagey, feel that the band's success is a testimony to it's spirit of community building through music.

Fort Wayne's Old Crown Brass Band, an all-volunteer group, modeled after traditional British brass bands, is celebrating its 10th anniversary this Sunday, with a concert at IPFW's Rhinehart Music Center.

The band's 35 members play the full spectrum of brass horns, and fill out a complete percussion section, including timpani. And like its English counterpart, the group enjoys the challenge of music competitions, as well as public concerts.

For a look at the passion that fuels enthusiasm, and drives their performance, WBOI's Julia Meek talked with band founders, Sam Gnagey and Eric Schweikert, to learn what this early 19th century tradition means to its dedicated members.
