Student-Run Radio Station Makes a "Point" in Fort Wayne

Matt Hamilton

Wednesday is National High School Radio Day, and one of Fort Wayne's best kept radio secrets just might be WCYT, the student-run station at Homestead High School.

The Point 91FM, as they're known around town, has been operating since 1995, and they're determined to broadcast that message loud and clear.

Their motto is "Where Music is the Point" and it's alternative and indie rock they specialize in, twenty-four hours a day, as well as live broadcasts of school sporting events.

WCYT provides a platform for a four year broadcasting program as an elective credit, and is run by over one hundred and twenty eager students.

Station manager Andy Dunn, himself a graduate of the course, sees this as an invaluable skill builder for the future.

"You're going to be using communication skills with every job you get, and it just comes down to learning how to speak," Dunn said. "I want these kids to find their own voice -- that's what I'm all about."

As part of High School Radio Day this Wednesday, the pubic is invited to tour their studios, meet the crew and more.

You can learn all of the details at their website.
