Students Host Information Session On Contacting Legislators

IPFW

Two months after the Parkland High School shooting, local students aren’t letting the conversation around guns slow down.

An information session called “Let’s Talk About Guns” was held at IPFW’s Walb Student Union Thursday night. It was originally planned as part of the Town Hall for our Lives movement over the weekend, but lack of availability from state and federal officials forced organizers to scale the event back.

Instead, the event became an informational campaign about the most effective ways to contact legislators. Organizer Brandon Blumenherst says while it wasn’t the ideal plan for the evening, it was still information people could use.

“We would have liked to have plugged into that larger movement, just because there’s more momentum with it, but at the same time I’m glad we could at least shift the event to a slightly different focus but with the same mission behind it,” said Blumenherst.

State representative Liz Brown and senator David Long cited prior engagements in their schedules. US representative Jim Banks was also invited, but Blumenherst says he never responded.

Another rally against gun violence is planned on Friday, April 20 at the Allen County Courthouse. The event will take place on the 19th anniversary of the mass shooting at Columbine.
