Offensive MVP Justin Green rushes for a score in the NAIA National Championship.

This past Saturday, the University of Saint Francis football team won the NAIA National Championship for the second straight year. The undefeated USF Cougars came into the game at Municipal Stadium in Daytona Beach riding a 22 game winning streak.

After winning a national championship in December of 2016, the University of Saint Francis extended Head Coach Kevin Donley’s contract through 2021. Donley’s Cougars haven’t lost a game since.

“Winning one is quite an accomplishment. To do it back to back really kind of puts the university in an elite category.”

Saint Francis is only the fifth team to repeat as NAIA champions in the last 62 years.

Next year, the team will be without many senior standouts such as starting quarterback Nick Ferrer. Running back Justin Green and linebacker Eric Dunten were named Offensive and Defensive MVPs respectfully. Both juniors are returning as the team balances celebration and preparation for the 2018 campaign.

“We’re going to enjoy this throughout the year, but you do have to reload. We start in mid-January (doing) the whole thing again.”

The 2017 NAIA National Championship is the second football title in USF’s history. The game also brought Donley up to 316 career wins as a head coach.
