The Obama administration created the Clean Power Plan with the goal of reducing carbon emissions 30 percent nationwide. But the U.S. Supreme Court put that plan on hold after industry groups and 28 states, including Indiana, sued. And Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt recently took the first step to repeal the plan altogether.

Indiana is one of 27 states suing the Environmental Protection Agency over its Clean Power Plan, which aims to reduce the country’s carbon emissions. That case got its day before the U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington on Tuesday.

The northern half of Indiana has long been touted as a good place to invest in wind energy—the state has the 12th most wind turbines in the country. But just because companies are investing in wind infrastructure, doesn’t mean the industry is booming quite the way it once was.

In 2007, Indiana had no large wind turbines. By 2009, the state’s more than 600 turbines produced enough energy to power nearly 400,000 homes.
