Indiana Michigan Power recently announced plans for its third rate hike in 25 years. WBOI’s Ben Clemmer reports it’s part of I&M’s Building the Future proposal, which seeks to raise $263 million.

The proposed rate increase would cost consumers about $25 a month. I&M spokesperson Tracey Warner says the money would go towards infrastructure updates that are overdue.

“The energy grid is aging and I&M for example we have about 350,000 poles and about fifteen percent of those are 60 years or older.”

Many residents in the north and northwest parts of Fort Wayne were left in the dark earlier today, which affected nearly 10,000 residents. The outage was first noticed at 10:50 am this morning and went into the early afternoon.

Indiana Michigan Power plans to start producing solar energy. The announcement was made Tuesday.

The Fort Wayne-based company already generates three other sources of emission-free power. About one third of their total production comes from nuclear, with a bit more from wind and hydro.

I&M plans to start a pilot program for solar production, constructing five solar facilities – enough to power over 2,500 homes.
