Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne will soon have a much shorter name. The Purdue Board of Trustees announced Friday that as the school splits into two universities, the campus will be known as Purdue University Fort Wayne.

The geosciences department at Indiana University--Purdue University Fort Wayne inspired the idea for the school’s mascot, the mastodon. Students in that department helped uncover a mastodon fossil about 40 miles north of the school, which is now on permanent display at IPFW. However, the department itself has just been eliminated.

IPFW’s restructuring plan goes into effect January 1, which means after the new year, some degrees won’t exist at the university. And that’s not the only change planned for IPFW. IU and Purdue trustees approved a plan to split the school into two separate universities.

The Legislative Services Agency released a report in January that proposed splitting Indiana University - Purdue University Fort Wayne into two universities, but it wasn’t until December that school officials held a press conference about the realignment.

IPFW is cutting some custodial services, now that five custodians and two maintenance workers have taken early retirement packages. Due to the hiring freeze at the university, the workers won’t be replaced. This means faculty will have to clean their own offices.

The Purdue Board of Trustees will vote later this week on whether to split Indiana University - Purdue University Fort Wayne into two separate institutions. On Monday, representatives from IU, Purdue and IPFW met in Fort Wayne, along with Senator David Long, to answer some questions from the public.

The women’s studies program at Indiana University--Purdue University Fort Wayne will not be eliminated, as was previously suggested in a plan to cut costs. The new proposal will cut costs by eliminating one job, and cutting the director’s pay.

Indiana University trustees voted in Bloomington Thursday to split Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne, which means IU and Purdue would govern the university separately. It still needs to be approved by Purdue’s trustees.

Indiana University trustees are expected to discuss the possible restructuring of IPFW during a meeting Thursday, but not much is known about what, if anything, will be decided.
