Several Local Universities Won't Penalize Prospective Students For Peaceful Protests

IPFW

A number of Northeast Indiana universities will join a growing list of schools around the country that will not hold discipline for peaceful protest against the admission of a prospective student.

In a statement Wednesday, Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne emphasized its “commitment to creating an environment that enhances learning by recognizing the inherent worth of all individuals at the university.” The University of Saint Francis released a statement as well, and posted the following at the top of its website's home page:

In light of the tragic events in Parkland, Florida, and the many planned protests throughout the country, the University of Saint Francis supports young people’s right to protest peacefully and will not consider disciplinary actions resulting from such protests as negative aspects of a prospective USF student’s application.

IPFW and USF are the second and third Northeast Indiana universities to extend support to prospective students who may be punished for protesting at their high school. Manchester University was the first, on February 24.

IPFW's full statement:

To all current and future students, Purdue University Fort Wayne is committed to creating an environment that enhances learning by recognizing the inherent worth of all individuals at the university. We guarantee all members of our university community the broadest possible latitude to speak, write, listen, challenge, and learn.

The Office of Admissions extends this guarantee to our newest Mastodons, whose admissions decisions will not be negatively affected by their participation in a peaceful protest on any side of any subject or by their engaging in any other form of protected speech.

If you have any questions for us or Purdue Fort Wayne Admissions, please send a message or leave a comment.
