Tree Planting Aims to Improve Local Parks

Friends of the Parks of Allen County

The Friends of the Parks of Allen County and local volunteers will be planting trees around Fort Wayne this weekend.

Fort Wayne parks will undergo a bit of a makeover this weekend as Friends of the Parks teams up with Parks and Recreation in Fort Wayne and Allen County for the Great Tree Canopy Comeback Saturday morning.

Volunteers for the Great Tree Canopy Comeback are expected to help plant more than 250 trees around parks like Memorial, Lakeside, and Fox Island, while at the same time learning the appropriate methods for planting a tree.

Great Tree Canopy Comeback co-chair Holly Hunter says with the help of the various parks departments, several types of trees will be planted to promote better sustainability.

“They’re very good because of devastation like emerald ash borer and diseases like that, they become a lot more diligent about creating a broad species of trees that are planted,” said Hunter.

Hunter says more than 230 volunteers have already signed up, and the effort should take a couple of hours to complete.
