WBOI Staff Member Wins Scholarship

WBOI's Araceli Gomez-Aldana won a scholarship to this year's Public Radio News Director Conference in Philadelphia later this week.

The scholarship was for journalists early in their careers, according to a release from Public Radio News Directors, known as PRNDI.

“PRNDI is thrilled to have DaLyah and Aracei at the conference this year,” said PRNDI President Terry Gildea. “Our early career scholarship program allows young journalists the opportunity to network with leaders in public media and help move their careers forward — without having them or their station take on the financial costs of attending the conference.”

Gomez-Aldana is the local host of All Things Considered, and also reports on issues such as immigration, education and public health.

“I am honored and excited to be able to attend the PRNDI Conference,” Gomez-Aldana says. “My goal is to learn as much as I can. I want to become a better storyteller. I hope to learn from the veteran journalists and from the presentations.”

A native of northwestern Indiana, Gomez-Aldana is a graduate of Indiana University with a degree in journalism. She interned at FOX59 and ABC7 in Chicago, and studied abroad in Spain.

"I want to report on issues affecting our communities. I want to share people's stories and get more people interested in public radio," Gomez-Aldana says. "My big career goal is to work as an NPR foreign correspondent. At the same time, I would also like to work for NPR, Latino USA and This American Life as a producer."

DaLyah Jones of KUT in Austinis the other early career scholarship winner.
